PHOTOS: BROODS and Erik Hassle Bring The Evergreen Tour to Toronto

An act that I have really been digging lately is BROODS, the brother-sister music duo from New Zealand who were catapulted into mainstream success with their hit 2014 single “Bridges” and stint opening for Sam Smith on tour.

BROODS are currently out on a headlining North American tour, the Evergreen Tour, in support of their debut album. They brought Swedish singer/songwriter Erik Hassle along to the first night of the second leg of the tour this past Friday, March 20 at Toronto’s The Danforth Music Hall.

Kalin and Myles’ Dedication Tour Rolls Into Toronto

Bay Area pop/hip-hop duo Kalin and Myles have been on a steady rise in recent years thanks to their popular Vine videos, four successful EPs and performances with artists such as Megan & Liz, Hollywood Ending and Trevor Moran. Kalin and Myles’ Toronto fans had a chance to show their dedication to their favourite artists, as well as openers Jacquie Lee and Anjali, when they played their first headlining show in the “6” March 18 at the Mod Club Theatre as part of The Dedication Tour.

Urban pop artist Anjali shined as she performed covers of Ariana Grande and The Weeknd’s smash single “Love Me Harder” and TLC’s hit “No Scrubs”, as well as her new single “Nobody” which features rapper Tyga. In between songs, Anjali and her crew pumped up the crowd by tossing out free merchandise, including lanyards and red foam fingers.

Jacquie Lee, who you may recognize from season 5 of THE VOICE, blew the crowd away with songs from her debut EP, ‘Broken Ones’, including “Empire” and recent single “Tears Fall”. The heartfelt and personal songs drew the crowd in and made the set feel very intimate. Jacquie also performed incredible covers of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin’ Bout You”, Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love The Way You Lie” and Cyndi Lauper’s classic “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”, which is featured on her EP.

Rebel Coast Sparked A Rebellion In Toronto

On a chilly winter night in December, there was a hot buzz surrounding Toronto’s Mod Club Theatre. Hundreds of young fans and supporters, otherwise known as the Rebels, were gathered to see their favourite teen pop-rock band Rebel Coast and openers The Synthetic Army, High 75 and Jesse Gold.

Rebel Coast’s Angelo Moretti, Curtis Smith, Kyle McVea, Amer Dhaliwal and Ryan Hawken were grouped together on the debut season of YTV’s THE NEXT STAR: SUPERGROUP. This show on December 5 marked their second show at the Toronto venue since their win, and it was evident that they continue to be stepping up their game.

The night started off with a bang as alternative rock band The Synthetic Army entertained the crowd with a selection of original songs, like their debut single “Chicago”, and covers, which included Fall Out Boy’s “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs (Thanks For The Memories)”. Judging from the crowd’s early cheers, they were the perfect opener and, as an added bonus, they gave fans the chance to warm-up their vocals for a long night of screaming and singing along.

George Watsky – who raps under the name Watsky – is a writer and performer with a fresh style. Hailing from San Francisco, California, Watsky is known for his versatility – his sound switches between silly and serious, technically complex and simply heartfelt. His self-titled album ‘Watsky’, which was released in 2010, peaked at #7 on the iTunes Hip Hop Charts. In addition to performing on The Ellen Show and Last Call with Carson Daly, Watsky, whose fast rapping skills have made him a viral internet sensation, was recently dubbed as a ‘Big Sound of 2011’ by The Next Big Sound alongside Mac Miller, Kreayshawn and Skrillex.

Watsky will be playing a show this Monday, November 10 at The Danforth Music Hall in Toronto, Ontario.

Lorde’s Toronto Concert was a Royal Affair

Electronica/pop/rock songstress Lorde is currently on a full-fledged North American tour in support of her debut disc, ‘Pure Heroine’, which has been certified 2x Platinum in Canada. The “Royals” singer touched down in our home and native land a few days ago for two shows, including an outdoor show this past Friday, September 12 at Toronto’s TD Echo Beach, presented by Live Nation.

Canadian indie/electronic duo Majical Cloudz, consisting of members Devon Welsh and Matthew Otto, kicked off the night with a laid-back set. Matthew played the keyboard on an ironing board while Devon sang and took time to chat with the crowd after each song. The guys have a very unique sound, with some members of the audience calling them a “Canadian Bastille”, but it was refreshingly different and meshed well with Lorde’s style. After singing a selection of songs including “I Do Sing For You”, Devon pointed to one of the planes flying overhead and joked, “That’s our jet. We have to go now!”
