A great song a day keeps the doctor away! Maybe that isn’t the way the exact saying goes, but I believe it’s just as true.
Music is my life. If I could permanently sew my headphones into my ears and have music playing all day, I would. My taste varies from pop to indie rock to rap to electronica and even soul. One of my favourite things to do is discover new music. Recently, I discovered five songs that I am really enjoying. Open your ears and check out my latest finds!
“Deadroses” by Blackbear
We had a vision though; now we’re dead roses
After discovering Blackbear’s music through YouTuber Andrea Russett’s Snapchat story, I fell in love with his incredible lyrics and voice. Mat Musto, who performs under the name Blackbear, just released his debut album ‘Deadroses’ and after giving the album its first spin, I was quickly attracted to the unique imagery in this song. On “Deadroses”, Blackbear compares the idea of dead roses to his deteriorating relationship with a girl. After listening to this song, I am tempted to send Blackbear a few nice roses – of the alive variety.
“Adore” by Cashmere Cat featuring Ariana Grande
You, you’re finer than some wine / We don’t need to go nowhere tonight
After working together on Ariana Grande’s latest album, ‘My Everything’, Norweigan producer and DJ Cashmere Cat released his new single, “Adore”, which features the pop songstress. In response to the outpour of love from their fans, the pair did their first live performance of the track at Ariana’s tour stop in Chicago on March 3. Cashmere Cat’s addictive production and Ariana’s sultry vocals work wonders together. I simply adore “Adore”!
“Outlines” by Mike Mago and Dragonette
Another one drops to pressure / Another dance in the dark
Dragonette has always been one of my favourite bands. Their live performances are incredible and they keep spinning out one infectious track after another. I first came across this song they did with Mike Mago in December 2014 but it only found its way into my most recent music purchasing spree and boy oh boy, have I been missing out! Within the first few seconds of listening to “Outlines” for the first time, I knew this was going to be my new favourite song. Judging by the amount of plays it gets per day, I would say my judgment was right on point.
“Outlines” by AlunaGeorge
It doesn’t always come to me clear, it doesn’t always make you feel near / Sometimes it gives me the fear that you were never here
I must have a thing for outlines! I follow the London music scene and have found many of my favourite artists from there, including Sam Smith and George Ezra. AlunaGeorge is no exception. Personally, I don’t believe AlunaGeorge can write a bad song – every single song from their debut disc, ‘Body Music’, is absolutely amazing. I thought I knew every song until I saw “Outlines” by AlunaGeorge on iTunes, still waiting to be discovered, while I was downloading “Outlines” by Mike Mago and Dragonette. Based on these two songs, I think naming your song “Outlines” ensures that Angela will fall in love with it. AlunaGeorge has done it again!
“Four Walls” by BROODS
Those four walls now are the only place that I can breathe out / And those four walls now are home
BROODS is a brother-sister music duo from New Zealand who experienced a quick rise to success in 2014 with the release of their single, “Bridges”. They opened up for Sam Smith on his Fall 2014 North American Tour which saw them playing sold out shows across Canada and the United States. In fact, I was supposed to see them at the Toronto show, which was unfortunately cancelled. Luckily, I will be seeing them March 20 when they bring their headlining tour to Toronto’s The Danforth Music Hall! I am really hoping they perform “Four Walls”. They performed it on Conan March 5 and the performance was mesmerizing. The song’s theme of unrequited love is something many people can relate to and BROODS really bring the story to life in their performance.
